about
The poem "Christmas Bells" was written by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow upon hearing the bells on Christmas day, 1863, in the dark days of the American Civil War. It was set to its most familiar melody nine years later by John Baptiste Calkin. This arrangement is my own adaptation, and avoids all those pesky black keys! Happy Christmas everyone, and thanks, Ian!
lyrics
I heard the bells on Christmas Day
Their old, familiar carols play,
And wild and sweet
The words repeat
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!
I thought how, as the day had come,
The belfries of all Christendom
Had rolled along
The unbroken song
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!
But in despair I bowed my head;
"There is no peace on earth," I said;
"For hate is strong,
And mocks the song
Of peace on earth."
Then pealed the bells more loud and deep:
"God is not dead, nor doth He sleep;
The Wrong shall fail,
The Right prevail,
With peace on earth, good-will to men."
So ringing, singing on its way,
The world revolves from night to day,
A voice, a chime,
A chant sublime!
I heard the bells on Christmas Day
Their old, familiar carols play,
and wild and sweet
The words repeat
"Peace on earth!
Good will!
Peace on earth, good-will to men!"
